What is Geographical Indication (GI)?

A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country). The use of a geographical indication may act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.

Geographical indications are generally traditional products, produced by rural communities over generations, that have gained a reputation on the markets for their specific qualities. The recognition and protection on the markets of the names of these products allows the community of producers to invest in maintaining the specific qualities of the product on which the reputation is built. It may also allow them to invest together in promoting the reputation of the product.

WHY GI?

Geographical Indication (GI) is important because it protects products that have a specific geographical origin and possess unique qualities or a reputation tied to that location. By ensuring that only products genuinely originating from the specified region can use the name, GIs preserve the unique qualities and traditional knowledge associated with these products.

This protection helps prevent imitation and misuse of the name, supports local economies, and ensures that consumers can trust the authenticity and quality of the products they purchase. Examples of GIs include Champagne from France and Darjeeling Tea from India, which are renowned for their distinctive characteristics linked to their geographical origins.

ABOUT INDIAN GI

Indian GI was an initiative of legal professionals and academicians specializing in the field of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and World Trade Organization (WTO) related issues.
